4 Ways to Detoxify & Cleanse a Child’s body (Simply, Safely, & Naturally)

Lemon water, Epsom salt baths, smoothies containing chlorella & spirulina, and specific fruits & vegetables are all simple, safe, and effective ways to help our bodies cleanse from toxins.

From pesticides on the foods we eat to flame retardants on our pillows, even the most “toxin-informed” parents struggle to avoid pollutants and heavy metals that inevitably infiltrate our families’ bodies. It is no secret that we are constantly inundated with toxins throughout our daily routines. Research has shown that genetics can play a role in our body’s ability to naturally detoxify substances; while some people may have no issue ridding their bodies of toxins, others may accumulate them, leading to various health issues. I have discovered some simple, safe, and natural ways to detoxify and cleanse the whole family from these harmful substances.

# 4 Way to Detoxify & Cleanse a Child (Simply, Safely, & Naturally): Smoothies with chlorella & spirulina

WHAT TO DO: I personally am not a fan of smoothies, but my kids LOVE them.  I typically make them with plain whole fat greek yogurt, fresh fruits, and then use local honey, stevia, or monk fruit if additional sweetener is needed.

It seems as they get older and start eating more foods with added sugar the more sweetener they prefer (more posts on that topic later).  For the extra detox and cleanse effect I add a spoon of greens that include chlorella and spirulina.

**(When I am in a rush and do not have time to make a smoothie from scratch, I add the powder supplement to a premade smoothie such as Bolthouse Farms or Naked Juice, I have no affiliation with these brands they are just two my children like)

HINT:  If you have picky a picky eater, the green color of the smoothie may be reason for them to not even try the smoothie. I suggest “hiding” it in a solid colored cup with a lid. Also, make  sure you try it 1st to make sure it tastes good, you can very easily add  things to improve the taste to before asking them to try it the 1st time.

WHY IT WORKS: Chlorella and spirulina are nutrient-dense algae loaded with antioxidants, often referred to as the “superfoods of the sea.” These additives offer numerous health benefits beyond detoxification. There are various products to choose from; personally, I have used different brands and always look for organic options, ensuring they don’t contain a list of unpronounceable additional ingredients.

# 3 Way to Detoxify & Cleanse a Child: Specific Fruits, Veggies, and Herbs

WHAT TO DO: Before you have the thought “My picky eater will never eat that!” hear me out.  Research has shown that most toddlers have to be introduced to a new food 12 times to even try it, and up to 30 times before they decide if they truly like it.  Now double those numbers if you are dealing with an autistic child.

I suggest you start incorporating these suggested fruits, veggies, and herbs into your child’s diet as soon as possible, and at a slow pace.  I am no stranger to picky eaters, and I am not ashamed to say that I have pureed many foods and added it to recipes unbeknownst to my children.

WHICH FOODS?: Check out the list to the right for a place to start

WHY IT WORKS: Many foods trigger an inflammatory response in our bodies, which over time can lead to serious health issues and affect children’s behavior. The foods I recommend, however, have an anti-inflammatory effect and can provide numerous benefits, including the detoxification of harmful substances from our bodies.  Healthier diets can lead to multiple positive changes in our littles.

# 2 Way to Detoxify & Cleanse a Child: Epsom Salt Bath

WHAT TO DO: You can do this in the sink for toddlers or the bathtub for older children and adults.  The size of the basin will determine the amount of Epsom salt to dissolve in the warm water; if you are using a sink dissolve ¼ cup of Epsom salt in warm water, if using a bathtub with a low level of water use ¼ cup – ½ cup of Epsom salt, for older children and adults use 1-2 cups of Epsom salts. (You can also add baking soda to this bath for added benefit using the same measurements)

Dissolve the salt in the warm water and soak in the water for a minimum of 15 minutes.  For toddlers and small children, I suggest bringing in bath toys that will keep them entertained for the time suggested.  Older children and adults can read a book to pass the time.

Note: Children SHOULD NEVER be left in the bathtub unattended.  The water temperature also needs to be closely monitored.  I have found that using the BACK of my hand is a better indicator of water temperature than my palm.  Our little one’s skin is much more sensitive to water temperature so use caution.

WHY IT WORKS: Epsom salt is a natural compound of magnesium and sulfate which can draw out heavy metals and other toxins through the skin in a process we call reverse osmosis.

I absolutely love Epsom salt due to its many health benefits which you will read about in my other posts, click here to read about using Epsom salt as a way to relieve hemorrhoids.

WHAT TO DO: It is simple, the 1st beverage of the day should be lemon water.  This is something you can make for you and your child to drink while getting ready for the day.  It can be prepped the night before or made on the spot.

For toddlers: in a single serving use ¼ of a lemon

For children & adults:  in a single serving use 1/2 of a lemon

Making a pitcher full: use a whole lemon (or two)

Many people assume only the juice of the lemon should be used, not true.  The entire lemon provides benefits.  Squeeze all of the juice into the cup and add the zest of the lemon for increased benefits (you determine the amount). If you do not like the texture of the zest, you can put it in a teabag or leave the pieces large enough not to go through a toddler cup straw.

HINT: Have a picky eater (drinker)?  Add a spoonful of Stevia powder, Monk Fruit, local honey, or pure maple syrup to naturally sweeten their drink.  I call this “lemonade” and they drink it right up. 🙂

WHY IT WORKS: Lemons are rich in vitamin C, a potent antioxidant. The antioxidant properties of vitamin C in lemon juice help prevent oxidative damage in the body, making lemon water an effective aid in detoxification.  Consuming lemons or lemon water can provide numerous benefits to the body.  Watch for my future post 5 Ways to use lemons to Improve Health
